Massage Therapy as a Complement to Medical Treatment

From arthritis to asthma, the benefits of massage are far-reaching. Although not a replacement for conventional medical care, massage can provide relief for many specific conditions and ultimately promotes an overall sense of well-being which greatly accelerates healing from both physical and psychological ailments. Studies have shown the positive effects of massage as a complementary therapy. Patients report improved sleep, increased relaxation, and relief from pain, fatigue and nausea when massage therapy was combined with conventional medical treatments.

Other benefits of massage therapy include:

  • Boosting of the immune system

  • Decreased blood pressure

  • Improved circulation (faster healing from injuries or training, and healthier skin)

  • Decrease in inflammation

  • Significant relief for many pre-natal and post-natal physical discomforts and stress related issues

  • Increased flexibility and mobility

Massage Therapy Modalities & Techniques

Massage Therapists at Brawnergy are experienced, trained, and certified so that you can trust their expertise and breadth of knowledge ensures you get the type of Massage Therapy that will best suit you and your goals. While many different modalities may be employed, several common massage movements that span them include:

  • Effleurage - Long fluid strokes mostly called upon to initially connect with the body or transition from one area to another.

  • Petrissage - Shorter, deeper strokes applied by fingers or heels of the hands. Kneading, picking up, wringing and rolling are all forms of petrissage.

  • Tapotement - Used for stimulating and bring attention an area. Forms of this technique include cupping and hacking, among others.

  • Compressions - A more static technique, compressions relieve areas of tension and knotting. Application varies from elbows to fingers, as does the pressure used from lighter to heavier.

  • Frictions - Applied on the surface tissue, these are rubbing movements on the skin including stripping & cross-fibering.

  • Vibrations - Powerful oscillation techniques like finger springing that send vibrations through the tissue to the bone. Generally used to relieve fatigue and pain as it creates a natural sedative.

Combinations and variations of these movements make up many of the common Massage Modalities.
